Studios, athletics and campus media for schools and universities.

Varto designs, supplies and installs production systems for schools and universities, trains the people who run them and supports them after handover.

Students practice directing, camera, audio, graphics and prompting here. The room has to start, run and reset inside the period, for a new group of students each year.

One way to build it

A teaching studio, in signal order

A three-camera studio on SDI, built so a class can run every crew position.

CamerasThree Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Plus G2 on tripods, or PTZ cameras where the room is also a classroomEach studio camera sends HD over SDI and takes a return feed from the switcher that carries tally, talkback and camera control. The program streams from the switcher and feeds the school channel, so morning announcements reach classrooms and the web. Also quoted with the room: racks, power and cable, the network, and the configuration, commissioning, documentation and teacher training.

Choosing cameras

Studio camera, PTZ or camcorder.

A school studio can mix all three. Choose each position by who will run it and where it has to go.

Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Plus G2, 4K Pro G2 and 6K Pro side by side with tally numbers

Studio camera

Who runs it
An operator on each camera, taking direction from the control room.
Where it fits
The studio floor, where students learn to run a camera the way a crew does.
Connection
SDI to the switcher, and a return from the switcher to the camera.
Models we start from
  • Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Plus G2: a 7-inch viewfinder, headset talkback and a Micro Four Thirds lens mount. From an SDI ATEM switcher, the return feed into its SDI input carries tally, talkback and camera control, so exposure and color can be set from the control room.
  • 4K Pro G2 and 6K Pro: two XLR audio inputs as well; the 6K Pro takes EF lenses and has built-in ND filters.
White Panasonic AW-UE100 PTZ camera, front three-quarter view

PTZ camera

Who runs it
One operator runs several cameras from a joystick controller by recalling stored shots; tracking models can follow a presenter on their own.
Where it fits
Classrooms, auditoriums and gyms, where an operator would block the view or is not available.
Connection
SDI, HDMI, NDI or USB by model, often with power on the same network cable.
Models we start from
  • Panasonic AW-UE100: 4K60 with a 24x zoom, NDI High Bandwidth, SRT, 12G-SDI and PoE++.
  • Canon CR-N300: a 20x zoom, HD over SDI and 4K30 over HDMI, NDI HX2 and SRT, on PoE+.
Canon XF605 camcorder, front three-quarter view with its lens hood and top handle

Operated camcorder

Who runs it
A student or staff operator on each camera, framing by hand.
Where it fits
Field reporting, events and any shot that moves; it runs on a battery and records to its own cards.
Connection
SDI or HDMI to the switcher, by model; the microphone can plug into the camera.
Models we start from
  • Canon XF605: one-inch 4K60 with a 15x zoom, 12G-SDI, SRT streaming and two XLR inputs.
  • Panasonic AG-CX20: lighter, with a 24x zoom, SDI and HDMI, NDI HX2 and SRT; its XLR inputs come on the optional handle.
Student operation

Set up for a crew that graduates.

A school system outlives its first crew, and often the teacher who ordered it.

Presets, macros and templates

Camera presets, switcher macros and a saved show, so each crew starts from the same state and a teacher can reset the room: one button for the open, a preset shot for each position, graphics templates students fill in.

Documentation for the next teacher

Start-up and shut-down steps, the signal flow and who to call, written for whoever inherits the room.

Training for the people who run it

On site, in East Rutherford or online, built from what each person runs, with refreshers bookable as staff and crews change. For TriCaster, 3Play and other Vizrt systems, Varto is a Vizrt Authorized Training Center.

Training
Athletics

Game day on campus: the stream, the videoboard and the replay.

A stream for fans at home, a show for the videoboard and replay for both, run by staff, students or a mix.

  • Seton Hall University Athletics · South Orange, NJAt Mike Sheppard Sr. Stadium, Seton Hall University Athletics has a control room built around TriCaster switching and 3Play 3P1 replay. Varto designed, integrated and commissioned the room, and trained the program's own staff to run it.
  • SwitchingTriCaster Prizm or Vizion, or an ATEM Constellation for many SDI cameras; a TriCaster Mini X or an ATEM Mini Pro for a few HDMI cameras.
  • Replay3Play Vivid, on its own or in one of Vizrt's two Campus Stadium bundles with a TriCaster; for a small production, DaVinci Resolve with its Replay Editor panel.
  • OutputsStream only, or the stream, the videoboard and a conference feed together, planned from the start because each output adds switching, graphics and crew.

Score graphics, chosen by who runs them

Three routes, chosen by who operates the graphics, where the score and stats come from, and the spec your conference or network sets.

College sports packageVizrt's college package for Viz Trio

Pre-built scorebugs for baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, football and basketball, taken to air by a Trio operator with Viz Datacenter carrying live data, designed to network and conference standards that we check against yours.

It runs on one licensed Lenovo workstation with NDI outputs: a TriCaster takes them as a source, an SDI switcher needs conversion. Scoreboard OCR is a limited-time inclusion, confirmed when we quote. For US colleges, universities and conferences.

Campus media and events

Lecture halls, ceremonies and the campus channel.

Communications and AV teams need rooms that record without an operator, events a small team can stream, and a channel or newscast that runs on schedule.

Budgets and lifecycle

How schools buy, and how the system lasts.

Budgets and purchasing

Department, athletics and technology budgets, grants and donor gifts, on fiscal-year and renewal cycles. When IT, athletics, communications and purchasing all review a purchase, we write the documentation and phasing for that committee. Varto also quotes equipment on its own when that is all a school needs.

Start from what you have

An audit keeps what earns its rack space and phases the rest. The first purchase is sized for the inputs, outputs, network and rack space the later phases need. Ask about financing for what one budget year cannot cover.

Through the season and the semester

Support through the semester and the season: per-incident help, a Varto OnAir plan for the systems that run on a schedule, or Professional Services Blocks for training new crews and staff. Coverage is confirmed for your equipment.

Eligible Vizrt hardware, TriCaster and 3Play included, is repaired on Varto's own bench, a Vizrt Authorized Repair Center.

When the season cannot wait

Rental TriCaster and 3Play kits, prepared on the bench that repairs them, can carry a tournament, a commencement or a repair window, subject to fleet availability, with Varto operators if the crew needs them. The rental fleet is the previous generation of both systems.

Start with one room, one season or the campus plan.

Bring the room, the class schedule and the people who will run it.
